FAQs
Alternative service questions
What is alternative service?
A court order allowing service by another method, such as text, email, social media, posting, mail, or publication, after you show diligent attempts failed. Our documented attempts are that showing, and our Alternate service ($45) carries out whatever method the judge approves.
What if I don’t have the order yet?
Order a serve at the level that fits your deadline — Rush or Guaranteed if the person is avoiding you — and we’ll attempt personal service and give you a detailed return of non-service listing every attempt with its date, time, and GPS location. That record is what a motion for alternative service is built on. Once the judge signs the order, come back and order Alternate for $45.
Which methods can a Utah judge authorize?
Commonly email, text message, a direct message to a social media account, first-class or certified mail, and posting. The order controls: we serve by the method it names, to the address, number, or account it names, and nothing else. If the order calls for service by publication, that runs through the newspaper rather than through us.
How fast is alternative service?
The first attempt is the next business day, and it is generally finished the same day it goes out, because there is no travel involved. Upload the signed order with your documents and you will have the Return of Service once the method has been carried out.
